LEADING INTERNSHIPS FOR NEW KNOWLEDGE
Internship Description
For my internship I will be working with a local photography company: Chowen Photography. Through this experience, I will gain an understanding of how to operate your own business, enhance my photography skills, advance my communication skills and ultimately begin to define myself as an artist. During these three weeks I am planning on creating a website exhibiting my photography in addition to creating a portfolio that I will be able to take with me and showcase to prospective clients.

Project Proposal
As a junior at Animas High School, I will be completing an internship in Durango, Colorado where I can expand my skills of photography and learn the mechanics of owning a business. For my LINK internship I will be working with Chowen Photography in Durango, Co. Chowen Photography is a photography business that mainly focuses on weddings and fashion/beauty. It is unique in the fact that they fly to the locations of their clients to take pictures for them. Their goal is to serve the community and the world around them by capturing once in a lifetime moments and making one moment last a lifetime. Heidi Chowen is an entrepreneurial photographer, having started her own photography business. She went to Fort Lewis to get an art degree and in her last semester of college switched to a business major and moved to New York. With these art skills and business skills, Heidi began her own photography business. With this internship Heidi will be able to show me the aspects of owning your own business and the factors that go into having a business. She will also be able to assist me with my photography skills, communication skills (with the public) and help me find myself as an artist. During this time spent with her, I will be able to potentially take work load off of Heidi and help her come up with new ideas for her business and/or photography and consequently provide an opportunity for her to teach and pass on her skills and knowledge of business and photography.
With the career of an interior designer in mind, I initially was planning on doing an internship with an interior design company in Denver to help me gain an understanding of what an interior designer does. However, it seemed that the timing of my internship would not work well with the company. As I was researching for more interior designers I came across a photographer that I had an instant connection with. I emailed Heidi right away asking her if she would be willing to do an internship with me. Coincidentally, she had grown up in Durango and had just moved back from Denver. I set up an interview with Rachel and decided that that was the internship I wanted to pursue. As briefly mentioned before, my career goal for the future is to major in business and interior design. However, I have been taking pictures since the age of ten and it has been a huge interest of mine. Through working with Heidi, I will be able to obtain more skills in business and learn how to operate my own business as well as enhance my eye in photography which helps me in my goal of being an interior designer.
The projects that I am planning to complete through LINK are to create my own personal photography website and/or the development of a photography portfolio. The website I will be creating will display different galleries showing the various types of photography I do. My portfolio will showcase my best work and will enable me to show businesses or clients the work I am capable of doing. This project is both relevant to me and my internship site because it will allow me to take my work into the real world and exhibit my photography while at the same time promoting my intern company when discussing where I learned photography skills. The goal of this project is for me to learn the aspects of owning my own photography business, to acquire professionalism in photography and to learn the techniques for creating a professional, refined and aesthetically pleasing portfolio.
In preparation for my internship, I have researched numerous photography businesses both here and outside of town. I did this so I could find a photography company that would both meet my artistic style and have people I would feel comfortable working side by side with every day. In addition to research, I have been collaborating with a local photographer to help me gain a better foundation in photography. I have also taken senior pictures for various people to enhance my skills in communication and to help me gain more practice.
Though I am not completely sure of how the time frame will work and what order I will do everything, I created a very general outline of how the three weeks will look:
Week 1: Learn the basics of the camera and photography, get an understanding of the business, and observe/assist with photo shoots, editing and planning for the following weeks.
Week 2: Design my own shoot and post editing , contact “model” and set up time and place for photo shoot.
Week 3: Create my website/portfolio of photo shoot and personal photography.
Though this is not a very detailed timeline I have ensured that I am not over planning for the time I have. The resources needed in order to complete this project include: Camera, Photoshop, computer, “models” and the assistance of Heidi.
I do not expect many problems during my internship and overall I have not encountered many problems throughout this preparation period. However, in the process of LINK, I have learned the importance of time. When I was going to interview for a prospective internship possibility, I waited for the owner to arrive for over 15 minutes after the agreed upon meeting time and left because she wasn’t there. However, I was unaware that she was in a meeting at a different location and turned up about five minutes after I had left. Because of this miscommunication I wrote an apology and asked if we could meet again another time. This taught me the significance of not only being on time but also waiting for meetings if the owner is behind schedule.
This LINK opportunity will not only enable me to increase my photography skills and help me gain a foundation in business, but it will allow me to find myself as an artist and expand my knowledge of expressing myself in various different ways through photography. This is an exciting and essential chance for me to not only define myself as an artist and acquire greater skills, but to grow as a person as well.
